Basic Information

Aircraft maintenance technicians are highly qualified specialists. To practise their profession they must hold an Aircraft Maintenance Licence (AML), which is obtained only upon successful completion of an approved basic training course. Training of aircraft maintenance technicians is conducted under the supervision of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) in CAA-approved Maintenance Training Organisations (MTO).

The Czech Technical University in Prague holds this approval. At the Faculty of Transportation Sciences, Department of Air Transport, students can study the Bachelor programme in Aircraft Maintenance Technology (TUL) and complete the MTO-approved training during their studies.

MTO CTU is an approved training organisation for category B1, B2, B3, L1, L2 and L3.

Training Process

An approved basic training course consists of theoretical knowledge instruction, theoretical knowledge examination, practical training and assessment of practical skills.

Theoretical knowledge instruction must cover the study areas (modules) defined by regulation, which our TUL programme fulfils. There are 17 study modules in total; for certain (sub)categories a specific combination of modules must be completed. The difficulty level of module examinations also varies by category. Module examinations are always written and contain multiple-choice questions with four options, only one of which is correct. A minimum score of 75% is required. Each examination must be notified to the CAA in advance, and the CAA has the authority to attend as a supervisory body. After successfully completing all modules the candidate is awarded a certificate of completion of the theoretical part of training.

The practical part takes place in a real aircraft maintenance environment. MTO CTU therefore provides it through subcontractors — students undertake practical training at companies with which MTO has a contract.

Practical training is also defined, according to the chosen category, by the number of hours and the individual maintenance tasks that the future technician must complete. The complete practical training must cover the use of common tools, assembly of a typical selection of aircraft components and participation in typical maintenance activities. Upon completion the student receives a confirmation.
